Dispersion of Fumed Silica
Fumed Silica (also called colloidal silica) is a fluffy white powder with an extremely low density, marketed under trade names such as Aerosil® and Cab-o-sil®. With both hydrophobic and hydrophilic grades available, it is widely used as a rheology modifier, imparting highly thixotropic properties at relatively low percentages.
Xanthan gum in Chemical Applications
Xanthan gum is a polysaccharide widely used for its thickening and stabilizing effect on emulsions and suspension, particularly in the Food industry. It is also used in many chemical applications such as adhesives, ceramic glazes, drilling muds, foundry compounds, latex emulsions, lubricants, paints and coatings, paper, pesticides, textiles etc.
Manufacture of Pesticides
Pesticides can be categorized into several groups - Fungicide, Herbicide, Insecticide etc. There are many different methods of application and use, and products are available in a number of formulation types, e.g. powder, granules, liquid concentrates, and sprays. Pesticides are typically suspensions of insoluble active ingredients in water; aqueous or oil based solutions are also used.
Production of Polymer Modified Asphalt for Road Surfacing
Polymer modified asphalt is increasingly used in road surfacing. Unmodified asphalt is sensitive to extremes in temperature, it becomes brittle and cracks in cold conditions and softens at higher temperatures, causing rutting and surface deformation.
Production of Automotive Polishes
Automotive polishes are traditionally solvent based emulsions consisting of petroleum distillates, waxes and surfactants, produced in paste and liquid forms. Some formulations contain cutting agents such as silicon dioxide. “Solvent-free” water based emulsions are becoming more common due to technological advances and health and safety legislation.
High Speed Dispersion of Bentonite
Bentonite is a naturally occurring aluminum silicate clay which can take up several times its own weight of water to form a highly thixotropic colloidal suspension or gel. The gel structure is derived from hydrogen bonds which develop between the clay particles (or platelets). These bonds readily break down with shear, reforming again if the shear force is removed.
Manufacture of Ink Jet Coding & Marking Inks
Inks for bar coding, batch numbering, use-by date marking and other identification purposes are used in many industries especially pharmaceuticals and food. Viscosity is in the range of 2 to 30 centipoise. Formulation varies widely according to the method of application and end use.
Preparation of Drilling Fluids
Drilling fluids (or drilling muds) have several functions, including carrying bore cuttings to the surface, cooling and lubricating the drill “string” and controlling subsurface pressures.
Redispersion of Filter Cake
The solid material obtained from filtration or centrifugation of a suspension is called filter cake. This usually contains 60% or more solids in aqueous or organic media.
Preparation of Paper Coatings
Paper coatings impart a variety of properties, both decorative (whiteness, opacity etc.) and functional (smoothness, absorption rate etc.) A typical coating has two principal constituents: a dispersion of pigments in water and an adhesive or binder.
